Most sump pumps last five to ten years. How long you can expect the sump pump in your home to last varies based on several factors. One is whether you have a pedestal or submersible sump pump. Pedestal pumps usually have a longer lifespan since they sit next to the sump basin. That means they aren’t directly exposed to water, unlike submersible pumps in the bottom of the basin.
Two other important factors are how often your sump pump runs and how often it has to run continuously for a longer than usual time. Submersible pumps are generally capable of running for an extended period without much issue. That’s because the water surrounding the pump helps to cool it and keep its motor from overheating.
