Signs Your Home Needs a Water Softener

Do You Have Hard Water?

Your home’s water is considered hard when it contains a concentration of calcium, magnesium, and other metals that can be naturally dissolved in water. Hard water can negatively impact a number of daily tasks like washing dishes, doing laundry, and showering, but it can be improved by installing a water softener.

Water softeners remove the minerals that have dissolved in your water. This process usually involves swapping out magnesium and calcium ions for potassium or sodium ions. Here are a few of the most common signs your home would benefit from a water softener.

Stains on Sinks, Showers, and Clothing

The dissolved minerals and metals present in hard water leave stains on your sinks, showers, toilets, bathtubs, and clothing. Although there are cleaning methods that can help remove these stains, it’s best to install a water softener so they don’t continue to come back.

Dry Hair and Skin

The minerals found in hard water can cause your hair and skin to become dry and itchy. It can also create a barrier around your skin’s pores, which could lead to breakouts and inflammation. In addition, your soap doesn’t dissolve as well in hard water, which can impact the proper removal of bacteria and dirt when you bathe.

Limescale Buildup

If your water is hard, you’ll probably start to notice a buildup of limescale on your glasses, silverware, and pots. This chalky film can be difficult to remove and can also create buildup in appliances like your dishwasher or washing machine. This will cause extra wear and tear on these machines and can lead to costly repairs.

If you’re still unsure whether your home’s water is hard, you can elect to have it professionally tested. If you’re ready to install a water softener, our team at Rare Breed Plumbing can help. We are a full-service plumbing company that specializes in water heaters, water softeners, and garbage disposals. Call us today to set up an appointment.
