Why Is My Faucet Making Loud, Strange Noises?

Leaving problems with your faucets unfixed can result in costly plumbing repairs. Anytime you hear a strange noise coming from a faucet, contact the experts from Rare Breed Plumbing to schedule an inspection.

High Water Pressure

When water pressure is too high, the water forces its way through a spout faster than it can handle; this damages the faucet and creates a screeching noise. The only way to fix this issue is to have a plumber lower the water pressure going to the faucet.

Dirty Aerator

Aerators, which reduce water pressure and often come as a standard feature on faucets, can clog with mineral deposits from the water, leading to strange sounds. A plumber can clean or replace the aerator to determine whether it’s the source of your faucet problem.

Corroded or Clogged Pipes

If the faucet makes a banging noise when you turn it on, there’s a good chance you have a clogged drain or corroded pipes, or there’s a possibility that your home needs bigger pipes. For a clogged drain, a plumber can likely clear the obstruction. However, if the pipes are too small or corroded, you may need all new plumbing installed.

Loose Washers

Faucets come with several washers, and it’s common for them to become loose or worn out over time. When this happens, a plumber must take apart the whole faucet and install new washers, followed by reinstalling the faucet. Leaving a loose washer in a faucet can cause it to make a screaming or whistling sound with the water turned on.
