Is It Okay to Flush the Toilet When the Power Has Gone Out?

A power outage can disrupt your daily routine. So many things that you rely on, from your computer to your microwave, won’t work. Can you still flush? It depends. If your home’s water and waste removal systems don’t rely on electricity, feel free to flush. If your home’s systems require electricity to function, you’ll need to be more cautious.

Situations Where You Can Flush

As long as you have a standard gravity-flush toilet and enough water, you can use your toilet normally. If you’re connected to municipal water and sewage, your toilets should work fine during power outages. If you get water from a well, you can probably still flush a few times. There may be enough water in your holding tanks to refill your toilet bowls after flushing. That being said, you might want to be conservative if you anticipate needing water for another purpose.

Situations Where You Can’t Flush

If you have a septic system that uses a pump to transfer waste from a tank to a secondary location, you may only be able to flush once or twice, if that. If you flush too many times and the tank fills, an unpleasant backup could occur. Also, if you have electricity-operated toilets, they won’t function at all without power. Some people have these toilets in their basements or in other isolated areas of the home. When your sewage system works but you don’t have any water, you can manually refill your toilet tanks with water so that you can continue to use the bathroom normally.
